ISET News DetailsThe Fifth NOAA Education and Science Forum Student Awards 12-10-2009 The Fifth NOAA Education and Science Forum
The Fifth NOAA Education and Science Forum opened at Howard University on November 12 and ended November 14. The Forum is held every two years at one of NOAA's five Cooperative Science Centers, which are located at Howard University, North Carolina A&T State University, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Florida A&M University and City College of the City University of New York. Nearly 1,000 college and university students and instructors, representatives from federal and local government, private industry and the general public convened to view and present research on atmospheric, oceanic and environmental sciences, engineering, and technology that support NOAA's mission. The forum is part of NOAA's continuing effort to increase the number of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians, particularly from underrepresented communities. According to the Congressional Diversity in Innovation Caucus, African Americans hold only 4.4 percent of science and engineering jobs, while just 3.4 percent are held by Hispanics. Seventy ISETCSC students (48 from NC A&T) representing the six partner institutions (University of Alaska Southeast, Fisk University, City University of New York, California State University-Fresno, University of Minnesota and North Carolina State University) and twenty-two faculty attended the meeting. The ISETCSC students and faculty presented forty-two oral and poster presentations. The topics and presenters can be viewed in this link (http://ams.confex.com/ams/5EDUSCIFORUM/techprogram/programexpanded_595.htm). ISETCSC student Sean Campbell, BS Life Sciences (Advisor - Dr. Alam Hasson) at California State University Fresno won first place in the oral presentation in the Climate, Air Quality and Global Change oral session and Ian C. Colon-Pagan, MS Physics (Advisor - Dr. Yuh-Lang Lin) and James Spinks, MS Mathematics (Advisor - Dr. Guoqing Tang) of North Carolina A&T State University won second and third place in the Weather, Hydrology and Watershed oral sessions. |
