Summary: This group will conduct research with the aim of developing sensing strategies, sensor technologies, and sensor packages that fill some of the existing data gaps in observation systems.  Research projects identified include: 1) eyesafe lidar for atmospheric aerosol, wind-field and water-vapor vertical profiling that can contribute to the modeling of arosol climate forcing, air pollution transport and transformation, and air quality forecasting, 2) a multi-sensor system for integrated observation of aerosol-cloud interactions including a multi-wavelength lidar and optical and microwave radiometes, 3) monitoring of atmospheric trace gases (namely NO2 and SO2) and validation of tropospheric satellite products by developing high-resolution UV/VIS differential optical absorption spectrometers (DOAS) and the required data reduction algorithms, 4) developing optical sensor requirement and sensor systems and packages for Case 2 coastal waters for monitoring water quality parameters, 5) conducting basic research in atmospheric physics and chemistry leading to the development of ultrasensitive, multifunctional, field-deplorable nanoscale chemical sensor systems for the measurement and monitoring of aerosol samples and greenhouse gases, and (6) developing new cost effective analytical methodologies for batch and continuous measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide and other trace gases.
